MG2024 TECH SESSIONS
NOS, OEM, AFTERMARKET PARTS
John Colwell is a recently retired accountant from Nashville, Tennessee and has owned quite a number of MG’s. He is a shade-tree mechanic that is/was committed to restoring cars to as-original as possible.
Experience includes total restoration of cars top to bottom (correctly and incorrectly!). If you have an MG mechanical or part problem, he has experienced it, and has, with the help of the MG community, found parts and solutions. He has focused on finding NOS or restoring OEM parts to as original condition as possible. One of his areas of “luck” is finding and hording NOS and OEM parts for restorations and purchases of high-quality aftermarket from companies. John is a frequent last-second bidder on e-Bay and a buyer of rare parts at various sites.
ROLLING TECH SESSION
In the hotel car park, John will hold his very informative "Rolling Tech Session" working on participants cars and discussing problems and solutions.
Rob Ficalora is a retired IT Executive who's been building things most of his life. He has built two V8 MGB'S, one for himself that's been on the road since 2011 and one with his son, also with a Ford 302, that has been on the road since 2022 (which they drove 2,300 miles round trip for its "shake down" cruise from Texas to Wytheville, VA for British VB 2022). Rob is married and has two boys both now on their own. He is an avid woodworker, metal worker, and fisherman and he is active in his church, especially in missions' activities. In addition to being responsible for the church's fall car show, he is active with Isaiah 117 House which provides a home for children in the first days of their entry into foster care. He is also the current membership chair and webmaster for the Houston MG Car Club.
Rebuilding SU Carburetors; H Series, HS Series and HIF Series in addition to Zenith Stromberg Carbs.
NAMGBR's Technical Coordinator Dave Braun has rebuilt hundreds of SU carburetors, having looked after his own since his first foray into SU carburetors in 1987 and eventually offering bench services and restoration. Dave will be sharing his techniques to assure a proper rebuild of each of the series of SU carburetors found in our MGs and provide insight into the differences between types and the specific things to look for in evaluating a carburetor for restoration.
Professionally, Dave is delegated by the FAA for approval of the design of aircraft engines, fuel, cooling, and mechanical systems; along with the installation and operation of turbine and reciprocating engines. Dave and Diane live in Georgetown, TX, and Winter, WI, with their Golden Retriever Dakota, their British Cars "Maggie" and "Sammy", and their Beechcraft Bonanza "Chip".
RESURRECTING AN MG
In addition to Monday's outdoor Rolling Tech session, John will be presenting two inside tech sessions during MG2024.
The topic for John's morning session will be Resurrecting an MG.
Your MG has lain fallow for years / decades. What does each system require prior to returning it to the road? John will discuss the 14 (or more) important components that need to be addressed before waking up this "Sleeping Giant".
Ray Holtzapple has been involved with MG restoration since his first MG that he purchased as a newly minted Ensign in the Navy. The 47 TC was a basket case, and he has only been interested in the purchase and restoration of basket cases since then. Under the tutelage of a master engine builder Tony DeCroch, he built his first engine in 1974 for his TC then went into acquiring MGA Twin Cams. Leaning on that engine was a challenge when few parts were available and companies such as Venolia Pistons and Iskenderian came to the rescue.
He has built engines for his Cad Allard, 56 Ford truck and a 53 GMC truck. Everyone is unique but has an experience in learning and meeting great new folks to help on parts and information.
Ray has recently completed engine rebuilds for several Houston MG club members and two 1500cc Magnette engines. He will take us through the disassembly to the installation of the powertrain for our MGS. Things you need to know to DIY or have someone else build It for you.
RESTORE AN MG IN AN HOUR
The topic for John's afternoon session will be "Restore an MG in an Hour" (Tonge in Cheek - I'm sure). In this session, John will go through the nine (or more) important steps to MG Restoration. As always, John will provide insights into the process with John's ever-present humor thrown in to add color to the session.

Austin established a headquarters for his colony in Mexican Texas, San Felipe de Austin Historic Site and museum share the stories of early southeast Texas settlers. San Felipe de Austin was the site of the Texas conventions of 1832 and 1833 and the Consultation of November 3, 1835. It served as the provisional capitol of Texas until the Convention of 1836.Today visitors can walk in the footsteps of these early pioneers which was the social, economic, and political center of American immigration to Texas before independence. In 1835 San Felipe de Austin was second only to San Antonio as a commercial center but it didn’t survive the war for Texas independence. It was burned to the ground by its own residents during the Runaway Scrape of 1836 so that it would not fall into the hands of Santa Anna and his advancing Mexican Army. You won’t want to miss this reconstructed village and one of the best museums of Texas history in the state.
